How to hire a Teacher

Teachers shape how students understand the world — through lesson design, classroom instruction, assessment, and individual attention. In India, teaching roles span government and private schools, coaching institutes, ed-tech companies, and international schools, each with different expectations and challenges. The best teachers combine deep subject knowledge with the ability to make difficult concepts feel simple and engaging.

Why this role is hard to hire

The hiring challenge

Subject knowledge is necessary but not sufficient — teaching ability is a completely separate skill. A candidate with a PhD in physics may not be able to explain Newton's laws to a 14-year-old. The interview needs to test both: subject depth (do they genuinely understand the material?) AND teaching ability (can they explain it clearly, hold attention, and adapt when students do not understand?). Demo lessons are essential because they are the only way to see the candidate actually teach. CVs and degrees tell you about qualifications, not about what happens in the classroom.

What to look for in a Teacher

Four traits matter: Explanation clarity (can they break a hard concept into simple steps that a struggling student can follow?). Engagement ability (can they hold a room of students — including the ones who would rather be on their phones?). Patience and adaptability (when a student does not understand, do they rephrase and try a different approach, or just repeat the same explanation louder?). Assessment thinking (do they test for understanding, or just for memorisation?).

For Indian schools specifically, also check for comfort with large class sizes (40-60 students is common), board exam awareness (CBSE, ICSE, or state board syllabi have specific requirements), parent communication skills (Indian parents are highly involved and expect regular updates), and bilingual or regional language comfort if the school serves students whose first language is not English.

Common mistakes when hiring Teachers

Hiring on qualifications alone. A B.Ed. or an M.Ed. proves the candidate studied education theory. It does not prove they can teach a class of 50 restless students. Always include a demo lesson in the hiring process.

Not observing a real teaching moment. Asking a teacher to "talk about their teaching philosophy" tests their ability to describe teaching, not to do it. Give them a topic and 15 minutes to teach it. You will learn more from those 15 minutes than from a 45-minute interview.

Ignoring classroom management ability. A brilliant subject expert who cannot manage a classroom will lose control within weeks. Ask scenario-based questions about disruptive behaviour, mixed ability groups, and time pressure.
