What is CEFR

The global standard for language proficiency

CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the internationally recognized scale for measuring language ability. It runs from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). Banks, BPOs, IT services companies, and any organization hiring for English-facing roles use CEFR levels to set clear, comparable hiring bars.

  • A1-A2: Basic user. Can handle simple, routine exchanges
  • B1-B2: Independent user. Can handle most work situations in English
  • C1-C2: Proficient user. Can express complex ideas fluently and precisely
  • Each candidate gets a level, not just a score. Hiring managers know exactly what to expect

How it works

Four skills tested in one sitting

The GoodFit CEFR test covers all four language skills in a single 25-minute assessment. Candidates read passages, write short responses, listen to audio clips, and speak responses that the AI evaluates. No separate test bookings, no human graders, no week-long wait for results.

  • Reading comprehension with timed passage questions
  • Written response graded on grammar, vocabulary, and coherence
  • Listening comprehension with audio-based questions
  • Spoken response evaluated by AI on fluency, pronunciation, and accuracy

Results

CEFR level plus detailed breakdown

Each candidate receives a CEFR level (A1 to C2) plus a per-skill breakdown so you can see where they are strong and where they need support. A candidate might be B2 overall but C1 in reading and B1 in spoken fluency. Your hiring decision and onboarding plan both benefit from this detail.

  • Overall CEFR level (A1-C2) for quick screening decisions
  • Per-skill scores: reading, writing, listening, speaking
  • Comparison against your role-specific minimum level
  • Results ready within minutes, not days

Use cases

Who uses CEFR testing

Any organization hiring for roles where English communication matters: BPO voice and chat agents, IT services client-facing consultants, sales teams covering international accounts, customer success managers, and any role where miscommunication has a business cost.

  • BPO and contact centers setting minimum B2 for voice roles
  • IT services companies qualifying consultants for international projects
  • Sales teams hiring for English-speaking territories
  • Any role where a bad email or a misunderstood call costs money

Scoring method

Content and pronunciation, weighted for accuracy

The CEFR score is not just about what candidates say - it is also about how clearly they say it. GoodFit blends **60% content** (vocabulary, grammar, coherence, task completion) with **40% pronunciation** (clarity, intelligibility, natural rhythm). This balance ensures candidates who know the right words but struggle with delivery get a fair and accurate level, while also flagging candidates who sound fluent but lack substance.

  • 60% content weighting: grammar, vocabulary range, coherence, and task completion
  • 40% pronunciation weighting: clarity, intelligibility, and natural speech rhythm
  • Accent-neutral evaluation - candidates are not penalized for regional pronunciation
  • Per-skill breakdown shows where content vs pronunciation drives the overall level

FAQ

Questions hiring teams ask about CEFR Communication Test

Is this an official CEFR certification?
No. This is a CEFR-aligned assessment, not a formal certification like Cambridge or IELTS. It maps candidate performance to CEFR levels so you can set clear, comparable hiring bars. For roles where the hiring bar is what matters (not a certificate), this is faster and cheaper than formal exams.
How accurate is the AI grading for spoken English?
The AI evaluates fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary range, and grammatical accuracy. It correlates well with human CEFR ratings for hiring purposes. For roles requiring formal certification, pair this with a certified exam at the final stage.
Can we set a minimum CEFR level per role?
Yes. Set B1 for internal operations, B2 for client-facing, C1 for senior consulting. Candidates below the threshold are auto-flagged. Your team reviews only those who meet the bar.
Does it work for languages other than English?
Currently English only. CEFR applies to any language, and we plan to expand to Hindi-English bilingual assessment and other languages based on demand.
